Motorists across the country faced panic at the pumps after BP fuel stations reported problems with their card payment machines.
Customers looking to fill up were told to pay by cash while the situation was being investigated.
Motorists were asked to use on-site cash machines to withdraw money, while other BP filling stations closed altogether to minimise the problem.
A BP statement read: “Our UK retail sites are currently unable to take card payments. We are working to rectify this as a matter of urgency and would like to apologise for any inconvenience this has caused out customers.
“The majority of our sites are accepting cash payments but a few stations have shut.”
Highways England said all BP fuel stations in the UK were “experiencing issues accepting card payments”.
The statement said: “This is affecting all motorway service areas with BP fuel stations.”
