Town Hall to be ‘front office’ for visitors?

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft wants to investigate whether the parish could act as the main Tourism office. However, he stressed that the idea would only be pursued if evidence showed that it would be in the financial interests of the parish to do so.The idea is one of a number the Constable wants examined as part of his proposals to find overall ten per cent reductions in States expenditure that he tabled for debate last month. He said: ‘This is only an idea at the moment, but it is one I may pursue if it is found to have any merit.

The Town Hall might be able to take over a number of functions currently run by Tourism at Liberation Square.’ He said that in France the local tourism office was the Hotel de Ville (the equivalent of the Town Hall).

The parish of St Helier had the staff and premises where it could act on behalf of the States as the main office for tourists.’Naturally we’d only consider such a move if it was financially viable, but it is the type of thing that would be worth examination.

I would like to be able to have a feasibility exercise carried out,’ he said. However, Tourism Board president Deputy Lyndon Farnham believes that it would be premature to discuss such a move in detail at what he described as ‘this early stage’.
