In glorious conditions, Jersey turned in a super team effort with bowler Owen Hughes causing the downfall of Guernsey after returning excellent bowling figures of five wickets for 21 runs in 9.2 overs.Jersey manager Chris Searson said: ‘It was a truely excellent performance.

The catching and fielding was superb while we also batted and bowled well.’The result was beyond my expectation and the players have given the selectors a lot to think about with the senior inter-insular coming up.

It’s a young under-25 squad but they are talented and that is good for the Island’s future.’James Mashiter and skipper Peter Gough, who captained the side well, got Jersey off to an excellent start, putting on 65 runs in the first 18 overs.

Jersey then stuttered as Mashiter followed Gough off the next ball and then the middle-order wobbled and Jersey were five wickets down for 72.But unlike last year when we slipped from 100 without loss to 150 all out they dug in well.

Jonny Gough made a quick-fire 20 and then Rohan Mohanty and Ian Crocker put on a very good partnership of 56 in 12 overs to repair the earlier damage.Bobby and Tom Minty also hit useful runs at the finish and after looking at a respectable total of around 190 the hosts finished their 50 overs on 211.Hughes, with his medium-quick inswingers, gave Jersey a brilliant start with two wickets in five overs and he also had a chance put down.Bowling aggressively he and Andy Dewhurst, who was steady at the other end, reduced Guernsey to 37 for 4 and the visitors never recovered from it.Nigel Crocker then came into the attack and his nine-over spell resulted in four maidens and three wickets for 27 runs before Hughes returned to finish Guernsey off in 31.2 overs.Jersey’s victory was the first by a home team in the series.

They now lead 2-1.
