The way Islanders took the cause to their hearts has been commended by Rotary International for being an ‘unprecedented’ response by two individual clubs. When the campaign run by the Island’s Rotary clubs ended last week, £73,940.68 had been collected towards the ambitious campaign to eradicate polio worldwide. The amount, likely to be increased further by tax relief, is the highest sum collected by any two clubs in that area. The magnitude of the Island’s efforts is evident in the district which it shares with the other Channel Islands, Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Wiltshire. The £73,940 it collected was the lion’s share of more than £188,000 raised by the 74 clubs there and played a major part in helping to make it the highest fund-raising district.
