The 35-year-old firefighter from Red Watch was rushed to hospital with serious injuries to his hand at around 2 am.

He lost his footing while carrying heavy equipment in the darkness with the fire raging in the tall gorse above his head. The blackened area was this morning littered with the charred carcasses of rabbits and lizards trapped in the blaze.

And at one point, the flames threatened to engulf a family home.It is estimated that the cost of putting out the fire alone will exceed £30,000.

The cost of the clear-up and the environmental work to restore the tourist spot is likely to make that figure rise considerably and it could be five years before the land is back to its former beauty.
