Finance and Economics plan to introduce legislation this year that will penalise those who return their forms later than the last Friday in May.However, it emerged in the States yesterday that it is proposed to give those who pay professionals to deal with their forms an extra two months.

Last year, 14,000 Islanders failed to hand back their tax forms by 6 pm on the last Friday of May.

If that figure persisted after a £200 was introduced, the tax department would net £2.8 million. The proposals are due to be discussed during the 2004 budget debate in December.
