As reported yesterday, Jersey non-playing manager Terry Smith was disappointed with his team’s performance while crediting Guernsey for their exceptional chipping and putting throughout.So Jersey lost possession of the RoyScot Trophy having lost all three sections, the fourballs and the foursomes both 3-2 and the singles 7-3.Smith said: ‘We contributed to our own downfall because we didn’t play to the best of our ability.
Eventually we dug a hole for ourselves because I really fancied us to get early points in the singles but they didn’t come.’We went into the singles two points adrift and Guernsey got a lift from that after gaining two halves.
I was confident that Richard Ramskill and Myles Jones and Paul Le Chevalier and Gavin O’Neill would win their foursomes matches but both where held to draws.’In the end Guernsey were superior on the greens and congratulations to them.
We didn’t hole enough putts and Guernsey made us pay for making mistakes.’Smith added: ‘Gavin O’Neill was by far our best player, he had two really good days of golf winning two-and-a-half points out of three.
His strike rate throughout was excellent.’David Rowlinson added to Guernsey’s joy with a 6-iron hole-in-one at the 190-yard third hole singles against Trevor Gray.Paul Le Chevalier and Gavin O’Neill put Jersey’s first point on the board with a 4 and 3 win against Dave Warr and David Rowlinson.Guernsey responded through Mick Marley and Danny Blondel who with an eight-under-par betterball score beat Richard Alker and Richard Ramskill 4 and 3.David Nicolle and Andrew Eggo defeated Trevor Gray and Christie McLaughlin 3 and 2 to put Guernsey ahead only for Jersey to level with a 3 and 2 win by Myles Jones and Rob Messervy against Nigel Le Noury and Steve Mahy.Nigel Vaudin and Bobby Eggo then won their match against Jersey’s Richard Williamson and Matthew Parkman at the final hole after Eggo made a birdie.Guernsey made wholesale changes for the foursomes and they won the section 3-2 again to take a two-point cushion in the ten singles matches.Andy Eggo showed excellent form as he and Rowlinson won 5 and 4 against Alker and Robbie Messervy.
Nicolle and Vaudin maintained their 100 per cent record by getting the pick of the foursome wins, 6 and 5 against Williamson and Parkman.Sunday morning’s efforts were rounded up by Warr and Mick Marley who with a birdie at the 17th clawed back a three-hole deficit to finish their match all square against Ramskill and Jones.
Likewise Bobby Eggo and Le Noury halved with O’Neill and the big hitting Paul Le Chevalier.Needing 4.5 points from a possible ten was Guernsey’s winning mark from the singles.
Mahy, keen to find form with no points, faced Ramskill.
The pair set the tone for the afternoon’s play as a birdie was carded on each of the opening five holes with Ramskill eventually losing 3 and 2.With Mahy’s win came news that Guernsey were up in six of the other nine matches.Andy Eggo rode his luck early on against McLaughlin hitting a spectator on the sixth to keep his ball inbounds and then going on to win the hole.
McLaughlin lost the match at the 16th.Bobby Eggo and Nigel Vaudin were taking one-up leads up the 17th hole.
Le Chevalier playing Eggo luckily cleared all the trouble right with his drive to rescue a half but Eggo held on to win on the last.
Vaudin’s win was made easier by Jones driving out of bounds at the 17th and with Vaudin’s 2 and 1 win.
Nicolle won the match for Guernsey beating Messervy 5 and 4.Young Danny Blondel had the pick of the remaining results as he defeated Jersey’s Richard Alker 2 and 1 to send the La Moye course record holder home with nil points.Royal Jersey’s Matthew Parkman had the consolation of an excellent 1-up victory over Guernsey champion Mick Marley.
