Bailiff: Courts need new powers to deal with the mentally ill

Before the sentencing of a man yesterday for attacking his father and demanding £500,000, Sir Philip Bailhache said that the options open to the Royal Court were of ‘grave concern’.Philip Le Blancq (26) was put on probation on condition that he receives psychiatric help after he admitted walking into his father’s bedroom at Merryvale Farm, St Ouen, on 21 November and hitting him with an iron bar as he lay in bed.Crown Advocate Andrew Belhomme said Le Blancq made his father write a cheque for £500,000 while he continued to threaten him.

In the meantime his step-mother called the police, who arrived and arrested the defendant.
