Thornbacks made to work hard by game College lads

In Division II the College’s 2nd XI, trailing by two goals early on, managed to pull backand draw with JWHA.

Elsewhere there were victories for Thornbacks, Gobis and Convicts.Division I – Victoria College 1st XI 2, JHC Thornbacks 3: Thornbacks continued their winning start to the season in this match on Saturday, but it was a very close-fought game which College can consider themselves unlucky to have lost.Thornbacks scored from their first penalty corner which Richard Determeyer converted with his usual powerful shot.

College immediately retaliated with a goal as Thornbacks were reduced to ten men following a sin bin offence.After the break Thornbacks scored twice, through Adrian Heelis, and Determeyer again, finding the net – the latter fortunate to pick up the ball deflected off the umpire into his path.

Victims goal scored by Mick Millar.JHC Gobis 10, JHC Ormers 2: No details provided.Division II – Hautlieu Hockey Club 3, OV Veterans 3: Having been beaten by Hautlieu HC last week, in the first round of the Minor Cup competition, Veterans played a very different game this time, spending most of the first 25 minutes camped in Hautlieu’s half, and they were unfortunate not to be two or three goals ahead.Eventually one of several penalty corner shots by Richard Le Lièvre paid off and Vets went in at half time 1-0 up.HHC took an early equaliser after the break but Vets scored again within minutes with Le Lièvre grabbing his second.

Although they were never behind, the Vets paid for a defensive error which allowed their opponents to score, but it was that man Le Lièvre again, scoring his hat-trick before HHC levelled the match again, and that is how it finished.OV stalwart Matthew Sutton had to go off injured midway through the second half, and his presence was missed, although his son Harry replaced him, playing well and putting in some good tackles.The younger OVs were also represented by Philip Cuming who came on for the last 20 minutes of the game and certainly didn’t look out of his depth.HHC scorers Will Veitch, Luke Maguire, Greg Savant.JWHA 3, Victoria College 2nd XI 3: The JWHA ladies started well in this 2003-2004 season opener, despite missing some of their key players but could not manage to hold on to the 3-1 lead they achieved through penalty corner goals, one scored by Ellie Butler and two from Chrissie Hefford.

Jonathan Medder notched the College goal.As the ladies tired the College boys took advantage of increased possession and space, scoring two further goals through Tom Luce and Medder to earn the draw.Crusaders 2, JHC Lions 3: No details provided.
