The licence has been awarded to the CI Traders group, who intend to upgrade their St Pierre Park Hotel in Guernsey as a conference and leisure centre.Jersey’s States are expected to debate the possibility of a casino in the Island before the end of this year.

Deputy Lyndon Farnham, the vice-president of the Economic Development Committee, is currently working on a proposition to modernise the Island’s gambling legislation. On Friday Guernsey’s States voted 25 to 19 in favour of granting CI Traders a ten-year licence.

Those in favour argued that the casino development would boost the flagging tourism industry, although during the debate some politicians suggested it would create a downward spiral of social problems and damage the island’s reputation as a finance centre.
