Age Concern chairman Daphne Minihane said they were planning the protest for the Royal Square and would welcome support from anyone who opposed the tax – young or old, individuals or groups.

The last time there was a full demonstration in the Royal Square was for the 2003 Budget, when Senator Terry Le Sueur’s Finance and Economics Committee were jeered as they entered the Chamber to present their ‘tax and don’t spend’ proposals.

On Saturday afternoon at 2.30 Age Concern are holding a meeting at Haute Vallée School open to all senior citizens.

On the agenda are the tax proposals of Finance and Economics, the latest shopping survey produced by Age Concern and a review of the debate on free television licences for the over-75s.

Mrs Minihane said: ‘The proposed five per cent sales tax will affect an awful lot of people, especially young people with families and mortgages.

We have attended consultation meetings, and we feel it will be going ahead and that it certainly will be debated in February.’
