The Transport and General Workers Union’s New Street office has been inundated by calls from retired workers calling on the union to officially back the protest.
Local official Nick Corbel said: ‘We fully support the plans to hold a silent demonstration.
The more people that are in the Royal Square the more effect it will hopefully have.
Our membership are very concerned at the way the States are going.’ Mr Corbel says the proposed goods and services tax will hit those who can least afford it the hardest.
