Confidence was high after they beat champions and current table-toppers St Clement A last week, and it showed in their play.
‘We certainly played a lot better than the last time we met them!,’ the A team captain Jane Le Feuvre said.
‘We played properly, as a team.
We made a lot of good interceptions and were scoring quite easily.
We built up the lead and then managed to extend it as the game went on.’ She said that Sharon Ollivier, Convent B’s shooter, was in good form, as was goal defence Serena Guthrie, but Convent A’s shooters Sophie Holmes and Laura Beeston battled well to score.
‘Sophie and Laura, and Serena, of course, have just been away to play in the English County League matches and they have toughened up,’ Le Feuvre said.
Although they have now beaten St Clement A and Convent B, who were second before this week’s match, Le Feuvre said that to regain the league title will be difficult.
‘If we win all our remaining matches then it could be down to goal difference.
I think it will go to the wire but all the teams in Division Ia will be giving it their best shot.’ Convent A are now seven points behind champions St Clement A, with a game in hand.
In Division III, St Clement D played St Lawrence C and ran out winners by ten goals.
Play was even in the first quarter and St Lawrence went into the first break 12-10 ahead.
Wing-attack Freya Moss had an outstanding game, with some superb aerial passes to her shooters keeping the game in St Lawrence’s favour until half-time but then Saints centre Siobhan Rondel used her experience and skill to work the ball from defence to attack, and the gap started to close.
With the combination of experienced seniors and enthusiastic youngsters, the easterners began to take control.
Spectacular shooting from Sally Danville turned the game in their favour and took them to the lead of 33-29, despite some solid defending from Rebecca Durbano.
St Clement continued to battle for possession and were rewarded by a good win.
