However, he rejected assertions that the number of essential employees would double from the current 900 to 1,800 if the States accepted the proposed new laws that will allow employers effectively to grant housing rights to employees.

Deputy Le Main had no doubt that the current figure of 900 people qualified under the current J-category housing regulations will increase if the States accept the proposed system of licensing.

However, in response to a suggestion from Deputy Geoff Southern that the number would double over a period of years, Deputy Le Main said: ‘It will go up, but I don’t for one minute think it will go up to anything like 1,800.’
