Despite a crushing 36-11 defeat Deputy Lyndon Farnham said this morning that he was ‘down, but not out’.
The vice-president of Economic Development took encouragement from some Members who said they may have voted differently if presented with specific plans rather than an ‘in principle’ decision.
However, under States rules the issue cannot go back to the States this year and it will be up to a future Minister for Economic Development to decide whether he or she wishes to chance their arm.
And while Deputy Farnham was disappointed by the decision – and the rejection of commercial bingo too – he was pleased that Members voted to set up a Gambling Commission which will oversee the industry and modernise the Island’s confusing gambling laws.
