On compassionate leave from the General Hospital, he will be seeing the site in Kokkuthoduvai Village near Mullaitivu where a new school will be built with funds from the Jersey charity Island Friends Together set up by him and his colleagues.

Travelling with him will be student Tom Richardson (21), who is on a year’s work experience.

During his stay, Dr Hima is to treat patients in the Kilinochi Hospital in the north of Sri Lanka – where he was born – as well as in other rural hospitals needing specialist help.

He is also planning to go to orphanages, refugee camps and schools to find out their most urgent needs.

‘I am also hoping to meet representatives of the local Rotary club with the possibility of linking up a project between them and the Jersey branches,’ he said.
