Philip Egglishaw, a former director of Ingouville Lane-based trust firm Strachans, is alleged to have promoted illegal offshore schemes which have denied the Australian treasury of up to A$300m (£130m) in unpaid tax.

Mr Egglishaw, a Hautlieu old boy, left the Island about four years ago to set up a company and trust administration business in Geneva.

It is also called Strachans, but Mr Egglishaw no longer has an interest in the Jersey operation, which is itself owned by two companies registered at the same address in the British Virgin Isles.

Mr Egglishaw, who runs the Swiss office with his brother, Richard, is at the centre of an investigation by the Australian Crime Commission.

It has announced that it is ‘targeting a range of promoters and participants allegedly involved in concealing substantial taxable income through falsifying documents and transactions.’ However, no charges have been laid.

Describing the case as ‘the biggest tax evasion investigation ever conducted in Australia’, the Sydney Morning Herald has reported that Mr Egglishaw first came to the attention of Australian tax officials in 2002 after they audited one of his clients.
