An onlooker ashore phoned 999 after seeing the man swim to rocks, where he was joined by the other four in the party at around 4.10 pm off La Rocque Harbour.
The Fire Service launched its inshore lifeboat and quickly picked up the capsized paddler.
Station officer Marc Le Cornu said: ‘The canoeist was parted from his canoe and realised he could not catch it, due to the tidal run and strength of the wind.
The crew brought all five ashore unharmed, but a little cold.
‘The rescue crew also located the missing canoe, drifting some distance from the group, and brought it ashore.’ He added: ‘We advise anyone considering taking part in water-based activities always to check the weather forecast before commencing their activities and to wear clothing appropriate to the conditions.
Additionally, canoeists should always wear buoyancy aids and spray decks for their own safety.’
