Levan Merritt, who was five at the time of the incident, made a return visit to the Zoo to be filmed for ITV’s ‘This Morning’ programme, broadcast today.
He was reunited with former ambulanceman Brian Fox, who had carried him to safety after he had fallen into the gorilla enclosure – a meeting this week which both men clearly enjoyed.
Sadly, because Jambo died in 1992, it was not possible for Levan to call in on his old friend who had treated him so considerately when he fell in front of him on that day in 1986.
As Levan returned to the gorilla enclosure this week, though, he was able to admire Ya Kwanza, the silverback gorilla who has replaced Jambo as head of the group.
