Among them are 35 new teachers and two new head teachers.

But the low numbers of primary-aged children in the Island has left some new teachers out of work.

Twenty newly qualified primary teachers returned to the Island this year, but only ten were given jobs in the Island’s schools.

The remaining new primary teachers were taken onto the supply register and Education’s head of evaluation and standards, Cliff Chipperfield, said they would be provided with development opportunities during the year.

Mr Chipperfield said: ‘Primary school numbers are going down.

There are fewer jobs on offer this year than ever before.’ The new primary and secondary teachers who have been taken on met up last week for a three-day induction.

It was the first time the course had been run and its aim was to introduce the new-starters to teaching approaches adopted in Jersey.
