He is concerned not only for the people making the attempts but also for the risks faced by police officers and other emergency staff called to the scenes.
Presenting a report to the Home Affairs Committee yesterday , Mr Power said that since February 2004 there had been 14 suicide attempts leading to three deaths.
As a result, the committee are writing to the Environment and Public Services Committee to ask them if they intend erecting safety barriers or other deterrents at the top of the multi-storey car parks.
Mr Power said that at present around one person every four or five weeks was attempting suicide fromt the top of the multi-storey car parks.
He said this was ‘quite alarming’ and that there were risks for the emergency services officers trying to dissuade the person from killing themselves.
