The man was taken in for questioning by police yesterday evening after a member of the public phoned them following coverage of the attack in the media.

A 19-year-old woman was said to have been raped while on her way home from a night out with friends by a man with black curly hair and an Australian or New Zealand accent.

The alleged attack happened between 3 and 4 am on Monday and police issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Det Insp Barry Faudemer said: ‘The man hasn’t been charged and will be with us for most of today.

He was arrested yesterday evening as a result of the news in the media.

We had a call from a member of the public, who are very helpful.’ Anyone with any information is asked to contact police headquarters on 612612 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
