Late move to allow open vote on Chief Minister

Deputy Roy Le Hérissier is preparing an amendment to Standing Orders that would be debated on the day of the Budget debate and which would meet the deadline to change the rules for the Chief Minister election on 5 December.

As things stand the vote will be a secret ballot and the public will never know how individual Members vote, apart from the indication of the two candidates, and the 12 Members who have signed their nomination papers.

But if the amendment by Deputy Le Hérissier is passed, all States appointments, including individual ministerial offices and scrutiny panel chairmanships, will involve an open vote.
