The three-year-old tortoiseshell cat, named Nicole, had to have emergency surgery to restructure her leg after the shooting.

During the procedure vets were surprised to discover 14 pieces of shotgun shrapnel embedded in her back from a previous attack.

Nicole has now been taken in by the animal rescue charity Cat Action Trust – but her former owners, who declined to be named, said that she was prone to going on long walks, sometimes for two or three days at a time.

However, when she returned to her St Brelade home last Thursday, they knew that something was wrong.

Nicole was obviously distressed, and her leg, bent out and upwards, appeared to be broken.
