Something between 2p and 4p will be added to the cost of imported beer sold in pubs and bars to raise the extra £300,000 needed.
Yesterday the States had to find funding for the decision it had made to allow over-75s with a single income of less than £12,770 or a joint income of less than £20,720 to qualify for free licences.
In the second part of Senator Mike Vibert’s amendment to the Budget, he got strong support for his idea, eventually winning by 38 votes to ten.
He said that he had looked at all of the areas where imp?t is implemented but discovered that the duty on beer was the least.
He added that his suggestion meant that the average drinker, who might drink five pints at the pub, would be paying an extra 10p.
‘I hope that all those who enjoy a beer, when they are having a pint, will think of the over-75s enjoying a free TV licence and not feel too bad about it.’
