Constable vows to clear street of traffic

Despite anticipated protests from market traders, Mr Crowcroft is determined to win the battle of French Lane by banning delivery vans from using it as a short cut and drop-off point after about 10 am.

And he said pedestrians are being put in danger by lorries and vans ‘whose drivers seem to think they have absolute rights to park, unload and cause congestion where they like’.

He has written today to Transport Minister Guy de Faye, who yesterday complained that blocking off access to French Lane – also known as Hilgrove Street – to delivery vans would be ‘madness’.

But the Constable argues the quality of life of residents and retailers is being destroyed by the constant stream of vehicles belching out exhaust fumes.
