All applications for new masts have been put on hold until the Health and Safety Department have completed their review, which will be based on studies written by the United Kingdom Health Department and others around the world.

New operators Cable & Wireless have made 35 applications for masts so far and fears have been expressed about the health effects on people and whether the masts will look out of place – despite the companies’ assurances that they won’t.

Phone masts were a hot topic at the public meeting held by the Environment Scrutiny Panel in St Clement’s Parish Hall last night.

Some people in the 30-plus audience were concerned about the potential health impact, but they were reassured by panel chairman Deputy Rob Duhamel, who said that Environment Minister Freddie Cohen said no applications would be dealt with before the health impact assessment had been completed.
