Island first for saddlebacks

They have been farrowed by two saddleback sows, which were imported into the Island last June, and which belong to organic farmer John Hamon, of Vermont Farm, La Haule.

In total, eight sows and two boars were imported into the Island last June by two St Brelade farmers – Mr Hamon and Jon Hackett, of Brooklands Farm, Route des Genêts.

They were the first pure-bred pigs to be imported since the liberalisation of States regulations relating to the import of ‘cloven-footed’ livestock.

The British saddleback is a black and white breed that, over the past 30 years, has become rare and endangered, with fewer than 200 sows remaining in all.

It is a very hardy pig, and the sows are regarded as the best mothers of all British pig breeds.

Saddlebacks are well-suited to outdoor systems of raising.

The two sows each had seven piglets last week, within two days of one another.

The pigs will be kept free-range.
