The average public sector employee took 8.13 days off sick from the end of June to the start of July last year, 1.2% less than the year before, and less than Confederation of British Industries (CBI) figures for the public and private sector in the UK.

Civil servants averaged 7.84 days off sick, and manual workers averaged 12.42.

But workers at the Prison took an average of a month off sick, while police officers took an average of just over two weeks.

Figures in the Sickness Absence Levels in Jersey’s Public Sector report have been welcomed by the Treasury Department, who say they mean that the annual productivity cost of sickness in the States workforce, calculated by averages of pay and absence, is around £9.2m.
