Foul smells ‘making people nauseous’

He says people are stopping him in the street to complain about foul smells drifting more than a mile inland from the Transport and Technical Services facility.

‘This is not just a question of unpleasant smells.

This is a smell that actually upsets a lot of people by making them feel nauseous,’ he said.

Deputy Lewis said it was not just residents in the immediate area who were suffering, as he had received complaints from Mont Millais and St Clement.

But Health Minister Stuart Syvret said if the residents had such concerns, they were not being referred to GPs or the General Hospital.

Three months after Health and Transport denied claims that the composting site posed a threat to public health, Senator Syvret said his department were closely monitoring the operation and while it might produce unpleasant smells there was no risk to health.
