Pitman registers first league goal for Cherries

Just three weeks after signing a two-year contract for the south-coast Club, 18-year-old Pitman netted in the fourth minute of a 1-1 draw at home against lowly Blackpool, his third start in the Cherries’ first team.

The goal capped a fine day for Jersey pro footballers as former St Ouen junior Ian Baraclough netted for League One Scunthorpe in a 2-2 draw at home to Swansea while Daryl Clare, twice Conference golden boot winner, bagged a brace in Crawley’s 2-0 home win against Altrincham in Conference South.

Pitman, who was denied by an upright in midweek away to Rotherham, said: ‘It’s pleasing to get off the mark for the season, I only had one other chance – a snapshot that was deflected over.

‘We had the better of the second half but unfortunately we missed a late penalty.

James Hayter has scored his last six, but although he struck it well it hit the woodwork.

‘I managed to get my goal with my head from around four yards.

The ball looped up after hitting the goalkeeper and I attacked it to get ahead of two defenders and a team-mate.

‘I feel I’m getting more confident every game, manager Sean O’Driscoll told me after the Swansea match I allowed myself to get bullied so I must learn to be brighter.

‘The crowd have taken to me, probably because I’m willing to shoot while not many of the others are prepared to do that.

One day I’d love to be able to take the penalties too, but at the moment I’ll have to wait because James Hayter is doing a fine job.’ Pitman, a product of the JFA’s Lloyds TSB Centre of Excellence, may be involved in a reserve-team fixture midweek while the next first-team game is at Bristol City on Saturday.

He had previously scored for Bournemouth in a penalty shoot-out after coming on as a sub away to Torquay in the Carling Cup.
