The maximum period should be achieved in all but two medical specialties by the end of March.

Mike Pollard, the chief executive of Health and Social Services, has also revealed that the Hospital is on course to achieve a maximum six-month wait from what is called ‘pen to knife’ – the time it takes from getting a GP referral to having an operation.

In the UK, the target for pen to knife is 12 months.
