Taxi driver Sean Crick (58), of Clarendon Dragons, has had two operations since last June, but he says his health concerns have to come second to paying the bills.
Mr Crick, a former St Helier Boys’ School pupil, used to get £210 a week for himself and his wife Joy, whose poor health also means she is unable to work.
But in October he was told that he could no longer claim on behalf of his wife and his payment was cut to £170 a week.
And because he is a home owner, he cannot claim welfare.
He can get a loan, but that will be claimed back from any estate or money he leaves in his will.
Mr Crick said: ‘I’ve been paying a stamp my whole life and I’ve never asked for anything.
Now I need help, but I feel like I’ve been kicked in the teeth.
I cannot survive on my payments.
I’m being forced back to work early.
I am worried about my health, but I am more worried about paying the bills.’
