Giant chessboard plan for central town area

The Constable, Simon Crowcroft, and 24 traders in the area want the area to be designated as an Important Open Space in the Island Plan and preserved from development.

Mr Crowcroft said that ideas for the space include recycling banks, more benches for town workers to sit and have lunch, more greenery to improve the area’s appearance, and the giant chessboard.

Mr Crowcroft said that with the latter idea, the owner of Hectors had volunteered to look after the chess pieces at night.

‘I have been persuaded by local traders and residents that the site is precious to them in terms of opening up the view into Dumaresq Street, providing a resting place for people walking to the hospital or the Parade, and that it has the potential as a minor square or a small open space for sitting,’ said Mr Crowcroft.
