Yesterday the States approved rules on smoking on public transport, higher fines for selling cigarettes to children and rules on putting cigarette machines in places where children have access.

They were introduced by Health Minister Stuart Syvret who will go back to the Assembly on 16 May seeking backing for the full smoking ban in all working places, including pubs and restaurants.

Yesterday’s changes were passed on a standing vote after having been agreed in the Tobacco Strategy last year.

They will bring in restrictions on where cigarette machines can be placed on premises to which under 18-year-olds have access; increase the fine for smoking on a bus from £50 to £2,000; and increase the fine for selling cigarettes to under 18s from £50 to £2,000.
