Vincentis weave magic and Guernsey suffer

Victories in the Cimandis Murattis for both men and ladies, alongside Sporting Academics’ victory over Guernsey Northerners in the Junior Upton, completed a woeful season for the Sarnians, who have only the senior Upton in their possession.

But their three sides over the weekend all left the Island with heads held high as Jersey had to dig deep for their rewards.

Topping the bill was coach Peter Vincenti’s sixth victory in the Cimandis Muratti Vase final at Springfield yesterday, a 3-2 victory with the decisive goal scored by his son, Peter jnr.

Vincenti senior, back for his second term as Island manager, continues to haunt Guernsey island teams, having also won the U21 Muratti last month – again for the sixth time! The father and son, the first such Jersey combination in a senior Muratti, celebrated at the final whistle – but both acknowledged that it had been a hard-fought win.

Jersey are now 48-40 up in the Muratti Vase series.

The Island’s ladies were expected, in many quarters, to retain the Inter-Insular Trophy with ease on Sunday, but that was far from the case, with victory only just secured with a cross-cum-shot from Jersey captain and player of the match Nina Woods.

Sporting Academics celebrated their first Junior Upton victory on Saturday, but their ten men were hanging on for a 3-2 victory by the end of a dramatic game.
