Senator Vibert, whose remit includes Island sport, has encouraged the Jersey Football Association to consider taking the next step for the Island’s football side and try to secure them a place in UEFA and Fifa tournaments.

Following Jersey’s triumph in the Muratti against Guernsey on Monday he says it would boost the Island’s international reputation if Jersey were to compete in the qualifying stages of the European Championship or the World Cup, or other tournaments and matches against suitable international sides.

And he says that if San Marino, the Faroe Islands or Luxembourg can play in major tournaments, so can the red-shirted players of Jersey.

Senator Vibert, who attended Monday’s Muratti, said: ‘I think it is time Jersey looked again and thought seriously about taking football beyond the Muratti.

It is an important match with a lot of history to it, but I think it would be interesting if we took football forward and got more people interested in watching the game as well as participating in it if it was going in a similar way to cricket.

We would be interested in helping in any way we could if they wanted to go down that route.’
