Joy and tears as an Island remembers

War veterans from across the globe were among the crowd, with soldiers from as far afield as Canada, America, New Zealand and South Africa enjoying Jersey’s national holiday.

Pipers piped, drummers drummed and brass bands boomed out wartime classics such as ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’ and ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ – to the delight of the crowd, who sang along with the music and clapped their hands.

A memorial service was held before the traditional re-enactment of the 1945 event which saw the Union Jack draped from the window of the old harbour office before the Jersey flag was hoisted.

People had lined St Helier’s streets and watched the Band of the Island of Jersey and the Caledonian Pipe Band, among others, march through town to Liberation Square.
