Emergency radio channel blocked

Presenters Colin and Edith made the request at around 3.20 pm because a Jersey boat user was inadvertently broadcasting the station over Channel 16, an emergency frequency used by those in trouble at sea.

Jersey Harbours contacted the national radio station because anyone trying to send out a mayday call off St Helier yesterday could have been drowned out by the latest pop hits.

Staff at Jersey Radio, which operates the emergency maritime station, said they thought the button on a VHF radio pushed in to talk had got stuck, and a second radio was playing nearby.

The result was that Colin and Edith were inadvertently being broadcast across Channel 16.
