Town square plan is rejected

The States decided yesterday that it was more important to restore the ‘little historic gem’ around Charing Cross than it was to retain the vacant site as open space.

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft asked Members to agree that the empty site on the intersection of York Street and Dumaresq Street should stay.

He called the site a small square and suggested it be reinvented with trees, a new mural and perhaps a large chess board.

‘If we do support this, then that little piece of land will be thronged with people,’ he said.

But Members voted 33 to 11 against designating the area an important open space.

They said that allowing building on the site could be the catalyst for the restoration of the old buildings in Dumaresq Street.
