But he said that he could not rule out a comeback for the company – which told all seven staff in Jersey that they were being made redundant last month.

General manager Jean-Paul Jerome told a press conference this morning that the company was being put into mothballs and the staff sent home – but he said that if Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf had given them the exclusive rights to the winter ferry route, they might have survived.

‘I cannot accept that Emeraude have let the Island down,’ said Mr Jerome, who added that high fuel prices had played a part in the decision.
