The States police said today that they had learned valuable lessons from the violent clashes between England and Portugal fans following the Euro 2004 semi-final.

Chief insp Shaun du Val said this morning that hot spots and potential flash points had been identified when nations with large followings in Jersey were playing.

It is possible that England could play Poland in the last 16 and the winner of that match could play Portugal in the quarter-finals.

Mr du Val said that known troublemakers would be monitored and officers would be watching out for individuals intent on causing disruption as the tournament progresses.
