Members of the Lieut-Governor’s family watched from the public gallery as he was welcomed to the Chamber by the Father of the House, Senator Stuart Syvret, and heard as Members showed their approval of their new member’s warm and witty speech in the traditional way by stamping their feet.
Less than 24 hours after taking his oath of office in the Royal Court, Gen Ridgway was telling the States that he had referred to Jersey as a model of constitutional reform in defence intelligence briefings in London on the state of reform in Afghanistan, and that his experience of working within Whitehall would equip him for his new sworn duty to oppose ‘traitors, murderers, ruffians, mutineers and rebels’ in the Island.
