It took Fire and Rescue crews over an hour to save Martha, whose owners are Jonathan and Sadie Rennard, of Clairval Farm, with the aid of an animal rescue harness, lines and a winch.
The plucky heifer vaulted the fence – which is there as a protective measure – while coming in for milking, but she quickly realised her mistake as the pit began to to drag her down.
Mrs Rennard said: ‘We have 27 cows so when they come in for milking they all come in dribs and drabs.
As I walked past them I caught a glimpse of the slurry pit, and I looked – and looked again – and I could see this little head poking out.
Of course I panicked, as we have had a run of bad luck and we’ve already lost three of them, so we were thinking, “”Oh God, not another one””.’
