Latest figures from the States Statistics Unit show that oil prices this spring were 20% higher than in spring 2005 and, overall, 9% higher on average than over the last 12 months.
Last year Islanders ordered 5.4% less oil while the use of electricity went up by 4.1% – something which has been linked to the rising cost of a barrel of crude oil.
‘Jersey imports virtually all of its energy and is therefore very vulnerable to the rising cost of oil around the world,’ said Duncan Millard of the Statistics Unit.
‘But the figures are starting to show a possible trend that more people are turning to electricity to heat their homes and water as it remains cheaper.’
