However, the chairman of the organising committee, Rodrigues Milho , said that the celebration of Portuguese culture and cuisine should be back in 2007, because a site has already been found for next year’s event between 21 and 28 August at the People’s Park.
Mr Milho explained that in 2004 the Waterfront Enterprise Board wanted £2,000 for the use of the waterfront site used in 2003, but the committee could not afford it.
The following year the committee’s preferred venue was the People’s Park but that was not available and it was suggested that the waterfront site was used again.
Mr Milho said: ‘We didn’t want to go back to the waterfront because it was so dusty.
This year the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, told us we could use half of the People’s Park at the same time as another event, but that was only two weeks ago and it didn’t leave us with enough time to organise the event properly.’
