Rival supporters clashed in Minden Place when the two nations met in 2004 and police have drafted in an expert on crowd control to avoid a repeat of the violent scenes.
Then, officers in riot gear were brought in and CS sprays were used to suppress supporters after Portugal beat England on penalties in the quarter finals of the European Championships.
But there was no trouble yesterday when hundreds of fans supporting both countries were in town watching the games.
Police were carrying small video cameras and filming events.
Minden Place was deserted until 10 pm, but within ten minutes of the final whistle that signalled Portugal’s 1-0 victory over Holland more than 1,000 supporters swamped the street, waving flags, chanting songs and dancing.
