Police to close car park to prevent football trouble

The police are expecting hundreds of football fans to congregate in the area following the end of the match at around 6 pm.

Following Portuguese matches throughout the World Cup, the area has been filled with fans celebrating the team’s success.

But after the quarter final of the European Championships in 2004 when Portugal defeated England, followers of both teams massed in the area and major disturbances broke out.

To prepare for possible trouble this year, all police leave has been cancelled and the area will be heavily policed during and after the match.

They are closing the car park from 3.30 pm, when the barriers will be brought down and any cars still in there will remain there until the crowds have dispersed after the game.
