About 25 people were arrested as a hard core of disgruntled England fans made their way to Minden Place intent on causing trouble and attacking celebrating Portuguese fans.

Police in riot gear had to make two baton charges around Phillips Street to bring an unruly mob under control.

The reasons for arrest ranged from assault to obstruction, and police say that although 40 people were detained, just over half were football related.

However, more are likely to follow as the police have yet to analyse CCTV footage.

Six people were taken to hospital by ambulance to be treated for injuries as a result of football related scuffles.

Chief Minister Frank Walker has urged the courts to ‘throw the book’ at these ‘louts’.

The pictures of the violence were broadcast around the world by television news channels and Senator Walker said that the ‘very small minority of yobs had caused damage to Jersey’s reputation’.
