Following the final penalty, hammered home by Fabio Grosso, a convoy of Italian fans made its way to Kensington Place and partied into the night before they were eventually told to go home by the police.
And Angel Sarconne, the treasurer of the Jersey Italian Club and organiser of the get-together at La Talana Guest House, said today that he was lost for words after the dramatic and closely fought final which Italy eventually won 5-3 on penalties.
‘When the penalty went in we went berserk,’ he said.
‘It was absolutely fantastic.
It had been a very tense second half and I was not sure we would do it.
Then when it came to penalties it was even more tense.
But every penalty we took was better than the last and I can’t really express how we all felt when that last one went in.’
